FAQs

  • As a relational therapist, I work from a systemic lens. “Systemic” means I am particularly attuned to how each individual is shaped by their relationships, their past experiences, and the larger structures they find themselves in.

I utilize a variety of models and evidence-based practices in-session, always tailored to the needs of my clients. Some of these models you might have heard of - Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) or the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy, for instance. Some models, like Narrative Therapy, you might not have.

Knowing the modalities might also not be as important as knowing that the main goal of therapy will be to support your change and growth through exploring emotions, deepening authentic dialogue, and making meaning.

My role and goal is to support you in creating strong, secure relationships with your partner and/or with yourself that will improve your overall wellbeing and interpersonal experiences.

  • I am aware that mental health provider credentials can be a confusing thing! My credentials (TLMFT) stand for “Temporary-Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

That means, I am licensed to practice as a therapist in the State of Iowa. However, since I am still temporary-licensed, I continue to receive supervision from a fully licensed marriage and family therapist and am also billing through their insurance.

What does that mean for clients you may ask? It only brings benefits for you! Being supervised by Amanda Goslin, licensed MFT and certified sex therapist, allows me to confidentially consult about clients with her, benefit from her expertise as a clinician and professor, and therefore provide even better treatment to you.

  • I typically see clients Mondays through Fridays in the afternoons and evenings, as well as on Saturdays.

Please refer to my online scheduling tool to see my availabilities for the upcoming weeks.

Life is busy and for many clients regular 9-5 appointments simply don’t work. It is therefore very important to me to provide both after-workday and weekend appointments, as well as additional appointments on an as-needed basis. Please reach out should have a specific appointment day / time in mind!

  • I offer therapy sessions both in-person in my Coralville office and online via a secure telehealth platform.

Although most clients prefer to meet in-person, for some meeting with me virtually might be the only option. Please know that recent research found tele-therapy to be as effective as in-person sessions.

If you are interested in doing couples therapy virtually, there are a few additional guidelines that help me to ensure our sessions are as effective as possible. I will share these with you at the beginning of our work together.

  • As a native German speaker, I am able to not only offer therapeutic services in English but also in German language.

While emotions are universal, they are often expressed differently in different languages. Working with a therapist who knows both languages may therefore be an added benefit for both German immigrants and bi-national (German/non-German) couples in Iowa.

  • No one client is the same, so there also isn’t a one-fits-all approach to therapy duration and frequency.

When getting started, I typically ask clients to commit to weekly sessions for the first several months. We then decide together whether this continues to fit your schedule and therapeutic needs.

Most clients wish to be seen on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to work towards their goals. Once such goals are met (and no other goals are identified), some clients opt to come in on an as-needed basis or for monthly check-ins.

  • I typically do not schedule consultation meetings with potential clients prior to meeting with them for an intake session.

With that being said, should you wish to schedule a brief 15-minute consultation meeting in order to asses whether I am a good fit for you / your therapeutic goals, please do not hesitate to reach out.

  • There are many ways to get in touch with me. Please refer to the contact page of my website to schedule an appointment directly via my secure online booking tool or submit a request via the contact form.

Alternatively, please reach out to me via…

    …e-mail: hello@withinmoodstherapy.com

    …phone: (319) 258-5399

Whichever line of contact you chose, I typically respond within 24 hours and look forward to hearing from you!

  • There are two options for scheduling: Some clients prefer to have a recurring time slot in my calendar. Other clients wish to schedule out their next appointment(s) at the end of each session.

That being said, my secure online booking tool allows existing clients to conveniently schedule their next appointments or reschedule existing appointments.

Rescheduling an appointment is possible up to 48 hours prior to session.

  • I completely understand that clients sometimes have to cancel their appointments for various reasons.

If that’s the case, I require at least 24 hours notice prior to the scheduled session.

If notice is given less than 24 hours in advance, I will charge a $100 cancellation fee.
